“Fat weighs more than muscle! That’s why you are so big!”
If I had a nickle for every time I saw this comment or a variation of it I’d be hanging on a nice tropical island, sipping a frosty adult beverage. It’s a regular comment in fitness circles among those looking to lose weight.
Myth: Fat weighs more than muscle
Fact: A pound is a pound is a pound. A pound of muscle weighs the same as a pound of fat which weighs the same as a pound of feathers.
What you really mean: A pound of fat takes up more space than a pound of muscle. This is what leads to you not fitting into your favorite pair of pants.
In order to reduce the size of your posterior assets, you need to combine a healthy diet containing quality foods, reduce portion sizes as needed, train with weights, use interval style cardiovascular training, and increase your overall daily movement.
When I started out on my journey to lose weight, I realized that I’d have to make some changes. A big part of those changes included modifying how I was eating. I had to make a decision that I wanted healthy more than I wanted to pitch a fit about eating veggies. So things like kale and cottage cheese entered my diet, and muffins, Swiss cake rolls, and regular soda left. There was one exception to this new approach.
Brussels sprouts. I never had them in a form I enjoyed as a kid, and refused to eat them. I decided that as an adult I wasn’t going to eat them either. The Cold War against sprouts lasted for years. Until now. The last veggie frontier has been breached- there are Brussels sprouts in my home. The game plan is roasting them with a little olive oil, and seeing how it goes.
At some point in time you have to realize that your health and fitness progress relies on you and the choices you make. We live in a world where there are a lot of excuses. Progress requires that you push past your personal excuses, even when it involves tackling the feared Brussels sprout. Comfortable isn’t where growth happens. Uncomfortable is.
